History of Arbois wines
|
 |
The origines of Arbois's wines go back to many years ago. Indeed, Pline the Young refered
about it in his Natural History in 80 A.C.
And right through history, very famous images appreciated and adored our wines.Charles V,
Emperor of Austria and Count of Burgondy , was proud to be in possession of vineyards in
the area. The illustrious Erasmus who was protected by the Emperor in 1510, also recommanded
these wines; and one thing is certain : Charles offered him a little barrel to try to heal his
disordered stomach.
François I liked it so much that he had 160.000 marcottes (young vines) brought in Fontainebleau
near Paris to try to start in the area. The French Record Office has many receipts of his numerous
purchases of Jura wines. Marguerite of Flandres was used to buy regularly two little barrels of
Vin Galant (now called Macvin). The Valois ligne transmitted to the Bourbon dynasty their love for
these wines. Henri IV was so enthousiastic that he composed verse. On visiting Sully once, before the
master of the house has returned, henri toured the kitchens and wrote of finding Arbois wine
"
the best I ever drunk
".
Many other references exist like Jacques Brel or Jean-Jacques Rousseau but the most famous
is Louis Pasteur who studied the diseases of wine in his vineyard in Montigny, in front of
our winery.Oenology, the study of wine, and the modern Medecine were born.
And the decree of 1935 created the A.O.C. system, Arbois applied and became the first
Appellation Controle in France
